Alex Riverstone: Second Life Photography Exhibit at Maison de la Chouette, Corsica

There’s a kite string pulling upward over a misty canal, two dogs watching from a bridge below. A ghost-grey island settlement reflected perfectly in still water. Herons perched on coastal rock. A torii gate rising from a sepia sea.

And then, just when the mood settles: pitcher plants in stark monochrome, or white reeds erupting against a blood-red sky.

This is a collection that earns your attention by never quite doing what you expect.

What holds it together is restraint, not sameness. Each frame feels considered. Whether Alex is working in near-desaturated pale tones or high contrast shadow, the compositions breathe. Nothing is crowded. Nothing announces itself too loudly. Even the more dramatic pieces — and there are some — carry a stillness at their center.

It reads like the work of someone who lingered a little longer than most of us would. Waited for the angle to settle. The light to shift. The moment to quiet.

Light, Landscape & Quiet Storytelling by Alex Riverstone. Now on view at Maison de la Chouette in Corsica South Coasters.

A Lifelong Photographer in a Virtual World

Photography has been part of Alex Riverstone’s life since he was nine years old, beginning with an instamatic camera. That early curiosity is still visible here — in the care taken with angles, in the way a single tree can anchor an entire frame, in the willingness to let empty space do real work.

Second Life gives him something physical space cannot: vantage points that simply wouldn’t exist otherwise. Scenes, structures, and light can be arranged, discovered, or stumbled upon in ways that stretch what a photograph can be.

Though he’s currently exploring black and white work, this exhibit casts a wider net. Alex shares landscape, structure, mood, and occasionally something warmer and stranger. The geese. The kite. The fan laid open in a summer garden.

When he’s not shooting, Alex builds mesh in Blender. He attends live music. He explores whatever the grid offers. This likely explains how comfortably this collection moves between the contemplative and the quietly playful.

His work has shown at Hoot Suite Gallery, Kultivate, NovaOwl, Raglan Shire Art Walk, and others. But this installation feels particularly well placed.

Maison de la Chouette — stone walls, vineyard air, open sky — knows how to hold a horizon line.

A Renewed Space in Corsica South Coasters

Both Maison de la Chouette and Cloud Galleries have recently undergone significant redesigns within Corsica South Coasters. This exhibit arrives as part of that renewal — and the fit between artist and venue feels natural.

For those who follow the mainland art community, it’s worth the visit.
